Wood Preservatives

Wood Preservatives: Until the mid-1980s wood preservatives containing pentachlorophenol (often called “penta”) arsenates or creosote were widely recommended. However, in 1986 the EPA restricted the use of these materials in response to mounting evidence that all three can cause birth defects and other serious health problems. The debate continues but anyone with sense knows the severe health hazards posed by penta, arsenicals and creosote. Better choices include linseed oil, borax products and naturally resistant woods.
