Whole house water filters and air filters

We would appreciate any advice about whole house water filters and/or air filters. Also any experiences that you have had with either type of system.

During the 2001 Arlington garden show there was a company from Fort Worth area selling whole house water filters. If anyone recalls who these gentlemen were, I'd appreciate the information.

One of the water system vendors at the Organic Show (the vendor was present both years) sells a reverse osmosis filtering system. While this method is widely considered one of the better systems for water purification, it has a major drawback IMO. The process wastes a good amound of water that is not processed but sent to the waste system. Unless there is a way to recover that water for non drinking/cooking uses I find it fails the test of the three Rs...Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

From my limited research, possibly a better choice at least in my application, is a point of use method. Using solid block media at the sink and, I believe, GAC media at the shower.

I am very interested in hearing others opinions on this and the air filtration solution. I currently use the 3M Filtrete furnace filters and an Austin Air unit in our bedroom. There has been some recent controversy as to the effectiveness of these HEPA units in removing allergens from our envrionments.

We did find the gentlemen from the organic show. The system that they use is not an RO system, but there is some backwash each night. I was not able to find out how much water is lost in the backwash. We will set up the system so that water going to the fish pond and lawn sprinkler will not pass through the system, but water for in house use will be filtered.

We found a whole house HEPA air filter. The system is always on with a low pressure fan. Some of the air bypasses the filters and goes to the furnace but with the system always on the air in the house will be filtered 3 - 5 times per hour. We are still about six months away from installing either of these systems. If anything changes we will let you know what our final decision is.

I have had an under sink 4 stage system installed by Water Event. It is really great! My mother has the whole house purifier by the same company. It is a great system. Water Event provides exceptional service.
