I am just now shelling the last of my pecan crop. I have a 5 gallon bucket of pecan shells. Is there any reason I can't put these out as mulch or can I compost them? Thanks

My thought is most any plant or plant material could be used as a mulch but I think there are better choices. Pecan shells decompose slowly, stain concrete and have sharp edges. I think Silver Creek Materials off 820 still sells them as mulch so there must be a demand. I would go right to the compost pile and then to the beds as compost.

A lot of people use pecan shells as a critter deterent in their flower beds - paw footed animals don't like the sharp edges - So if you have any problems with animals in your beds the shells would be great!
