I am noticing swarms of large (1/2") black ants with wings in my back yard. Are these harmful, and if so, what can I do to get rid of them (other than drowning them in the pool!)

My guess is that it's just new queens taking off to start new colonies, but I'm no ant expert. Just more ants to deal with. What kind of ants are they? Are they from a colony in your yard?

Most likely you are dealing with a carpenter ant (wood ant). The species that are solid black are typically found in heavier timbered areas. They typically do not infest homes. They are not harmfull out in your yard or on your property. They will only do damage if they infest your home. I would usually suggest leaving them alone unless you visibly see them trailling into your house.
