Help! I had a 5.5" Texas Red Oak planted in my front yard two years ago. The house was built less than a year earlier. During its second summer, it began dropping and regrowing misshapen, oversized leaves. At the nursery's suggestion, I began applying 'SuperThrive' on a weekly basis, but this did not help. Gradually, branches died off completely, and the tree was lost.
The nursery replaced it in February, and commented that the roots had not taken hold at all. The root ball was basically the same as when it was planted. The new tree seems to be struggling as well. The leaves it put on seem small, and some are beginning to turn brown, leaving bare branches. It also seems to be putting on an inordinate number of acorns. There is some kind of flowering, mossy growth on many of the branches.
I'm afraid that there might be a problem with the soil in that location. A smaller Red Oak on the other side of the front yard seems to be doing fine. We live in The Colony (20 miles NW of Dallas) and have heavy black clay soil. I do not use any herbicides, but have used inorganic fertilizers.
I'm at my wits' end. Any feedback or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |
