Where is the "root flare" ? Is it where the trunk starts to enlarge or lower where the first lateral root is found ? I planted 3 burr oak trees 3 years ago. I inspected them , after finding out about "root flare", and find they are planted too low. I had 4" of mulch around them. After I locate the "root flare" do I dig out 4 " more and replace the mulch or stop at the "root flare" and add the 4 " s of mulch on top ?

The root flare is where the trunk suddenly gets wider, just before you hit the first roots.

I'd pull back everything (to about 18-24 inches) to get the flare fully exposed, then just put back a thin layer of mulch almost to the trunk. Don't actually get mulch on the trunk.
