No big deal now, but anybody have an idea why my freestone peaches have split pits? Not all of them, but some. Me thinks it's from uneven watering, akin to splitting tomato skins. Any ideas? Thanks.

hockeymike-
I've often wondered about this myself. I even get fruit from the grocery store that has the same condition. What I have observed with the split pit fruit (say that three times) is a growth of whatever between the two halves. Maybe the fruit starts to grow at the same time as the pit and something gets stuck in there preventing it from fusing together. Take a look next time and let me know what you see. I only have one tree with peaches this year, the rest got nailed by frosty. So far, not split pits.
