Any blended organic fertilizer will work, the more ingredients the better. What is most important is that you plant them so they will have good drainage .

You plant your sago palms in the ground? I live just west of White Rock Lake and I love sago palms, but have them in pots. I drag a couple of them out on the covered porch in the summer and drag them back in the house in the late fall. Under what conditions are your sagos planted, other than in soil with good drainage? (how much sun, how much water, etc). How often do your sagos put out new leaves? Any pest problems?
Thanks,

I have planted several palms. The ones that seem to do best are planted in raised beds amended with paramagnetic materials. Never plant sagos unprotected on the north are west. They do okay in full sun but will sun spot in our blazing summers. Sego palms are under story plants and will perform best with filtered sunlight. Segos will usually produce 4 to 5 layers of foilage a year starting in late spring. In extreme cold you can tie the plums up to protect the crown. You can also do this in early spring for 4 weeks to produce more rapid new growth. If you try this dust a little corn meal on the crown to protect it from fungial problems. Also once a leaf has turned brown it will never turn green again.

Do you mean that the segos put out 4 to 5 leaves a year or 4 to 5 layers of (4 to 5) leaves a year?

4 to 5 layers I already have 5 layers so far this year . I have mine palanted on the south side of my house . It is palanted between a crapemyrtle and a wax myrtle in the summer of 2001. It has been through 2 winters exposed to the elements and had no foilage dieback only about 10% discoloration.

Lawn Dr. Ron,
How did your sago palms do this winter? Do you normally expect the cold weather to cause some leaves to turn yellow (brown)? If so, after you trim the dead leaves, how fast do the plants rebound? I was planning to transplant 3 sagos which have lived inside for several years as potted plants, but I'm timid about their chances outside.
Thanks for your insight,
K |
