| I have a Shumard Oak that we recently planted. It was a 95 gallon container grown tree. We planted it 12' from the house, 16' from the pool and about 4' from the patio. I have been told by a friend that the roots could damage my patio, pool and foundation. Did we plant it too close to these structures or will I be OK, and if not how long before the roots are large enough to do damage? :roll: |

There are trees all over Dallas that are within inches of foundations and pools. If there is a problem, it will not be because of the tree. The patio however is another story. Most patios are not constructed to withstand the roots of a big tree. Just look at what a tree planted in the parkway can do to a sidewalk. Is your patio about the same construction as a sidewalk? You can install a heavy gauge piece of aluminum or steel in the ground to prevent the roots from growing towards the patio. It needs to be 18'"24" deep.

Other than the great suggestion for the patio, I too don't think you have anything to worry about.
From my experience... I have a ~60 yr old American Elm 1 foot away (now) from the perimeter wall of my pier and beam foundation... the trunk circumference has to be about 8 ft. The house is 77 years old and both are doing very well!
Roots tend to avoid growing where there is absolututly no chance of getting water or nourishment... and that would be under your house! |
