I have about 0.5 acre that is going to be my pecan orchard. I don't irrigate it and don't intend to except to water my trees. Can I use clover as a ground cover in this area?
What kind of clover is best?
Where can I buy seed?
Can it survive in an area with no irrigation?
When should I sew it?
Any general suggestions from anyone who's used it?

Clover is fine but it only grows here in fall to spring - dies in summer.
Builds nitrogen in the soil for trees and/or grass.
White clover seems to do the best.
Farm store probably be the best since farmers usually plant in late summer and early fall.
It will grow with out irragaqtion.
Depending on your soil and its history you might have to add "bugs in a jug" to get bacteria working, but this is cheap.

Robert,
I have a question directly related to this.
What would happen if he scattered alfalfa seed in the area?
I guess I also have a comment. Malcolm Beck shows pictures at all his talks. He has one picture of a Hill Country (I think) peach orchard that is never irrigated. The only source of moisture is rain and natural soil moisture. However, they mulch the heck out of it. The mulch is maybe two feet high between the trees. -just something for you to consider. |
