I planted a 5 inch caliper Live Oak in my backyard back in February of this year. It has never done very well and when summer came around, it took a long time to sprout leaves. Now all of the leaves are turning brown and are starting to fall. I suspect that the tree was planted too low and the roots are getting flooded. The soil around the tree is always moist, even though I have not watered in a week.
My wife took a sample of the tree to a plant place and they said that the leaves were browning because we haven't been watering the leaves at night. I didn't know that we were suppose to do that. Is this true? Or is it more likely that the tree is drowning?
In either case how can I save this tree? The tree ball is very large and heavy, so I would hate to have to replant the tree. |

Definitely more likely a drainage problem.
Yes, sometimes in summer you might have a shrub that could benefit from the cooling that a light misting of the leaf surfaces can offer, but at night that would be irrelevant.
Check the planting depth, correct if needed, improve the drainage there, and implement the sick tree treatment. That's your best bet. |
