We have recently purchased some property on the coast, bay side at
Port Lavaca. We are wanting to start planting and improving the property.
Our property is (1) row of houses off the water. We are wondering what kind of trees, shrubs,and flowers might grow well in this area? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks Cathy |

After the hurricane are you still one row back or are you seaside? :wink:
St Augustine is the dominant grass. Besides that you should be able to grow anything that passes as a house plant for the rest of us. Citrus also does well. You might even be able to grow some of the tropical fruit trees like the messy mango. |

Hi David, Well we sure were glad that we didn't have any kind of structure on our land when the hurricane came through. The eye of the storm passed right over us. A lot of our neighbors did get damage from the storm and all of the piers are gone but thank goodness we are still high and dry and setting one row back. :D
We are having the ground turned over and do plan to get San Augustine going. I also thought about planting Oleanders for border. I think I have quite a few green plants that I can take down there and set out(ferns, yuca,corn,cheveliar,(Miss spell) also an indoor palm plant, what do you think? I have seen some beautiful plants down there with lots of different color, I'm not sure what they are but they may be hybiscus or boganvia. Do you think any,all, or none of these would do well down there and can I set them in the ground or should I keep them in pots? |

Yucca might have trouble in the ground, but the rest should do well. Bouganvilla should be beautiful. There are different varieties. Be sure the place you buy it knows that and gets you one with lots of flowers all the time.
I think you could grow orchids outside in pots hanging in the trees.
The only problem you will have is the occasional light freeze every couple years. But I don't think the coast gets frozen much or very hard. You'll be humid to the point where things won't dry outside.
I didn't think the piers down there were safe anyway. |
