I've been using the anti-fuego fire ant solution, mixing about 5oz to a gallon of water. It usually turns the grass brown where I apply it to the mound, is this normal?

it's a small price to pay to get rid of the ants, just curious if my mixture is too potent.

I think you may be over-applying it.

I use one cap full (~1 oz) per gallon of water, per mound, and have no brown grass and no more fire ants.
