I ususally put my coffee grinds in my planter boxes however my roommate insists that rotten fruit can go there too. The planter boxes are close to the kitchen door and I don't relish the idea of rotten fruit outside the door. :?:

Good compost is a blend of "greens" (high nitrogen materials) and "browns" (high carbon materials).

You need the nitrogen materials to add nutrients, to supply and reproduce the beneficial microbes for decomposition, and to heat up your compost piles.

You need the carbons, in order to control odors, prevent nitrogen leaching and evaporation, supply energy for the microbes, and to help create humus faster inb the compost and soil.

Add carbons like leaves, white paper, or straw to your mixture.
