It depends on the size of the tapeworm. DE is definitely a good preventitive. Also ridding the area of fleas will help prevent. Fleas are part of the lifecycle of the tapeworm and dogs get tapeworms by ingesting an infected flea when scratching with their teeth. If you take them out of your yard [i.e. vet, petsmart, walks] they will come into contact with fleas. Monitor the dogs health and appetite when you start the DE and continue check the anus and feces for the telltale wiggling rice grains which are tapeworm segments. If the appetite or health changes go to the vet. Definitely use DE as a preventitive and feed a good quality food.
Tips on flea can be found in the Pests Forum and Pets Forum.
