I've read various treatments, some recommend using tree goop, others have recommended using a light cement to fill the hole.
I've got a similar issue, except mine has worsened. I had an "arborculturist" recommend filling it with Great stuff (expanding foam product). Upon ripping it out today, I discovered a horde of carpenter ants. I removed all the great stuff, and found the hole was now about 4-5 inches deep, and probably 12" vertical.
I'm at a loss as to what to do, I've removed as much of the dead would as I could, sprinkled the area liberally with diatomaceous earth, and then applied tree goop.
I would love for a moderator to offer me insight as to whether i should fill the hole, or drill a lower hole to make sure it doesn't retain water in the chamber the carpenter ants have created. |

Stanley -
In poking around, I found two relevant threads:

http://www.dirtdoctor.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=877
It seems that the general consensus is to place a generous application of hyrdogen peroxide, then apply tree goop. |
