Last fall we had several large crepe myrtles planted and this summer they had only a few leaves and blooms.

I was wondering if there is any hope for these and what can I do to help them for next spring.

Are they planted too deep? Or do they have poor drainage?

The dirt is in Kennedale, very red and gray clay. I did put hardwood mulch around them to try to retain moisture.

I tried a deep root fertilizer but the dirt kept blocking the holes on the device that you stake into the ground. So I'm trying to fertilize with a mixed solution and going around the built up mulch...not too close to the plants.
