Pruning Crape Myrtles

Hello, All -
I have a question concerning my four crape myrtles. As happens with many homeowners, I must deal with landscaping decisions made by the previous owners of my home. I have two large bald cypress trees in my front lawn, near the street. I also have four crape myrtle (trees/shrubs - I am not sure which) in the same area. These six trees form a line along the curb in front of my home.
My problem is that the trees compete for sun, etc., and the crape myrtles are not thriving or blooming as they should. I am contemplating pruning these down to more of a shrub height. They are now about 6-8 feet tall. Out of control, I know, but I'm a real novice. I'd like to ask - how might this impact the health of the crape myrtles and should I be concerned about "over-pruning"? What time of year should I do this, and should I apply anything to the tree after a severe pruning? Many thanks in advance for any advice and guidance.

If these are 6-8 feet tall now they are not the shrub variety. Therefore, I must assume they are the large size crape myrtles, which do not respond well to pruning. Not only is it harmful to the tree but also you destroy the beauty and natural shape of the tree forever.
I would say you might try pruning up the trees but you cannot do that with bald cypress. My only thought is to transplant them or cut them down. I transplanted about a dozen 5 years ago during the winter and every one popped out again that spring. You have a situation someone left you with that will never be very attractive.

Hello Rosie, I don't know if you have children but some cities ban plantings that close to the street. It's hard to see children run into the street. So there's another reason to move them! Deb
