How late in the year can you plant sod? Also, if we plant in a checkerboard style will it fill in or will we have an uneven lawn?

Bermuda is planted every month of the year, just go into any housing development and you will see it being done. However, I believe spring and late summer are the best times to plant sod.
If you plant in a checkerboard pattern you will have a checkerboard pattern. The weeds will fill in the open spaces before the bermuda can and you will have an uneven lawn. If you have a choice financially, don't do it.
