| I want to make an asparagus bed but have soil with a high clay content. How about a raised bed. Would it have to be too large to be practical? And how does that veg do in a north texas climate? |

| I grew it at a previous residence and it did well. It was shaded from the west (hot sun) by some trees. At the time (still may be true), it was recommended to dig trenches, plant and fill in as the asparagus grew. It seems to me that you could accomplish the same thing with a raised bed; fill in the beds as the plant grows. Sure tasted good! |

| I have found that asparagus does just fine in the dark clay soil in this area. If you have ever dug up an asparagus root that has been in place for three or four years, you will realize how tough the plants and their roots are. I'm sure they would do fine in a raised bed, but it's probably not necessary. I dug a trench, placed the roots, and layered in a few leaves in with the soil as I filled the trench back in. |

I live in McKinney and have black clay soil. This past spring I dug a trench in the garden about 12" wide and 12" deep. I inserted the roots and just about covered them up. About every two weeks I would cover a little more of the roots with compost/soil mix until the trench was somewhat mounded. Plants are 6' tall right now.
I think a raised bed would also work fine.
