Pine Tree problems...
Listened to the Dirt Doctor show the other day...thanks for telling me before I got my XMAS presents (I asked for five Eldarica Pines). I still want pines in the front yard but have questions...
(1) Where do I find Italian Stone Pines...how much are they and how many feet per year do they grow?
(2) I read somewhere that Dawn Redwoods grow much faster...will they do well here and how much are they?
(3) How about Cedars like we have here in Dallas (I live in the Great Trinity Forest area)...how fast do they grow and how much are they?
Sorry for the barrage of q's, but I am in a hurry to get the trees that would work the best for my yard decided on so I can finalize my XMAS list to Santa!! :D |

I have no input on Italian Stone Pines, even tho I'm 100% Italian, but I can respond on the other two.
Dawn Redwood is a beautiful tree and does well here. I saw one near the m-streets in Dallas last year that was 60 feet high. The problem may be finding it. I would check Green Mama's, Redenta's, Rhodes and Shades of Green.
The best cedar is the native Eastern Red Cedar which will grow just about anywhere and fast. Look for areas that are being bulldozed and developed, you can probably get some free ones for the digging. Otherwise, most everyone has them on sale right now but may not around x-mass.

Thanks for the response Tony...any idea how fast the cedars grow a year? I might just get a few more of those (we have several in the backyard on the hill).
I like the idea of the Redwoods as well...I gonna check around. |

Given a normal watering program (vs what little they receive in the wild) I would say 1-2 foot a year. It is fast in both height and width.

I've been looking for a Dawn Redwood for about 3months. No one has any and usually recommend a Bald Cypress. A Cypress tree will not work for me due to the larger spread. Anyone have any suggestions. I'm thinking about ordering a seedling online..
