I recently built a compost bin - my first - using four wooden grass pallets (it looks just like Gar's pic). I filled it halfway with shredded leaves, added some greens, cornmeal and other kitchen scraps, along with about a cup of pancake syrup diluted in a gallon of water (I need to use this syrup for something, since we're now lo-carbing) and then wet the whole thing down.
As I added another bucket of kitchen scraps today (and stirred it around with a garden fork), I noticed that the leaves, etc. are sifting out between the slats. Should I put some kind of landscape fabric around the whole thing to keep everything inside, or just not worry about it?
Also - we live on about 5 acres and was wondering if anyone had some tips on raking and hauling leaves to the compost bin. There's got to be an easier way!! |

My compost bins don't look like my Avatar (pic) I built mine out of cedar and wire that has 2" x 3" holes. Yes it was a little pricey, but well worth it.
My compost consists of about 95% grass clippings from about 1.25 acres yard. I wanted bigger holes for the air to get in. I also put a stack down the middle. My bins are 4' X 4' X 4'. If you send me a PM with your personal email address, I will email you pics of them. If it is windy, sometimes mine leak out as well, but only the things that are real light in weight. In the summer I turn it every two weeks. |
