I have onion maggots in my onions. This is the first time I have seen this. Nearly every one I pull up has the maggots in the stem. I planted my Texas 1015Y's about 4 weeks ago and they have doubled in size but the leaves begin dying from the bottom and it looks like my whole crop is infected. I know I will have to reset my onions but can anyone please tell me how I can prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advance,

I've not had to deal with onion maggots, so far, but from what I read, you can plant red onions which may have some natural resistance, use insect parasitic nematodes to control the maggots, and sprinkle pepper, chili powder, ginger, or dill to repel the female flies which lay the eggs causing the infestation. Hope this helps some. The book I read this from also suggests crop rotation, row covers, and planting later than you usually would.
