Native Texan needing help in AR

I'm a newcomer via my Mom who is an avid listener to HG and the organic way. My husband and I moved into a new home almost 2 years ago. The beds were done by a landscaper who used red contractor dirt and put cedar bark on top of that. Underneath the dirt is a gray clay. We have drainage problems with our flower beds and would like some advice on this.
Also can anyone give me tips on any organic suppliers here in AR? I've asked around at a couple of places but some of the people look at me as if I don't know what I'm asking for.....I'd appreciate any and all help...Thanks

Most gardening stores around the country carry various types of compost now, and you can get dry or liquid molasses in gallon sizes at feed stores. Lowe's and Home Depot carry different types of composts and composted cow manure. You can buy cheap cornmeal in your area ifyou can't find horticultural cornmeal.

Clay responds to input of compost. Start with that, and some cornmeal, and molasses. Listen to the show and look at the other posts on the website to glean what you think you can use and are adventurous enough to try. You can mix the compost in if you're energetic enough, or just put it on the top of the soil and let it work itself in. I'd recommend the latter program. Pull back your mulch (credar is just fine), spread the compost and a little cornmeal, and put the mulch back on top. It will take some time but you will see progress.

If you can find liquid molasses (ask them if they don't at least have it for hunters, who use it to sweeten deer feed) apply that at 2-4 oz. per gallon of water liberally on the beds afte you have added the compost. Then spray your whole yard. You'll begin to see results fairly quickly.
