| Does anyone know of a way to grow lettuce year around in Texas. I cannot find organic lettuce here and would like to grow it myself, considering that I eat so much of it :D . |

| I don't know of any lettuce that is heat tolerant enough to survive the Texas Summers. It would be nice though. Have you tried finding organic lettuce at Central Market or one of the Whole Foods (think that's what it's called)? |

I can get the org lettuce at those places about once every two months. I live three hours away from the closest Whole Foods.
I guess maybe if I put in a small, all-window, air-conditioned greenhouse :lol: . |

I grew romaine lettuce all winter in a planter on my back porch that I pulled inside when it was really freezing cold. I bet you could do that all summer in a sunny window. You could give it a try! It never made a really good head, but we picked the leaves off at all sizes to use when we needed them and then cut it off to a stump. The stump is growing back with leaves almost big enough to eat now. You might give it a try. We did it because we don't eat quite enough for a whole head and kept having to throw part of it in the compost pile. Now we just eat the leaves and it makes more! it isn't tremendously pretty but it sure is tasty!:D

| To have an all glass, air-conditioned greenhouse in Texas during the summer, would cost so much in cooling bills that you are better off to drive the three hours weekly to Whole Foods, lol. I never thought about growing it indoors, but it would take lots of space to grow enough for a steady diet of salad greens. |

In all honesty, I had to share some with my kitty and my little dog when it was inside this winter. However, I found out that if I keep lemongrass and chives in the house, they will leave me enough lettuce so we can share! Both my cats LOVE lemongrass and my little Yorkie does too. Go figure! So I have to get new ones every once in a while because they eat them down to a stub. But that's okay. They're getting some greens so it's good for them! :D
