| Hello, I am recovering from back surgery & was unable to start my seeds indoors as I had planned. I have some seeds that were sent to me this year. If I plant them outdoors how can I keep the birds(grackles :x )out of them before they have a chance to bloom? I also want to start a compost pile. My husband mows about six yards here in our neighborhood. He fills up everyones garbage dumpster with twigs & leaves! The grass he leaves on the yards & enourages all of the neighbors to do the same. I still cannot do heavy lifting but I want to get started. Where do I start? Do you just build sides & leave everything on the ground or do I need to put a pallet underneath? Thanks for all the help. :D |

Just a pile work great - hard part is turning it - your back should not be invoved in this part. Leaves and ground up sticks are fine. if you can buy some old hay that is soiled or spoiled will help hold the leaves down when there is a good wind.

Just remember the mix for greens/browns is 1/3 to 2/3 and you'll do great. Greens are fresh, green (or orange, or red, etc.) organic material and browns are hay, newspaper, etc.
Just choose a place that is acceptable and begin to pile materials there. Robert is right, turning it is a chore you will have to ask your hubby to perform but it is well worth the effort.
Just plants your seeds in nice soil, water them in and let them grow to seedlings around 2inches or so, then mulch. They should be fine unless soil dwellers take them out. I'd be worried about those much more than the grackles. Just keep an eye on them for roly-polies or snails & slugs.

| I've made a simple frame from 1/2 inch (or so) PVC pipe and thrown bird net over it to keep the .... Nice little creatures off the strawberries / blueberries / ect. Might work to keep the little darlings out untill the seeds sprout, and once that happens I bet they'll leave the plants alone. |
