I have been manually removing a "nice" stand of Johnson grass in my garden but it has become a full time job. Can I kill it with the vinegar solution, then till the dead grass into the soil. There is part of my garden that is not planted yet, but will be shortly if I can get all the Johnson grass out. Any other recommendations?

redtailhawk sittin' on a limb...

Excuse me, I'm back now :D It has been a long time since I've had to deal with Johnson grass, but it should be a great candidate for the vinegar/orange oil/soap solution with it's broad leaf lots of surface area to be treated. The times I dealt with it, it was pretty easy to tame with frequent cutting.

Thanks for replying...glad to hear that Johnson grass is a good candidate for the vinegar solution. I was still wondering, though, if Icould till the dead grass back into the soil, or if I need to totally remove it before tilling and planting?

When plants die from vinegar there is very little left to till. It dessicates the leaves so that there is almost nothing left but ash.

Rather than tilling, would you consider a thin layer of compost covered with a thick mulch?

Please share your experience with the vinegar on the Johnson grass, a couple of weeks after it has been applied.
