Okay I have been buying compost from a local nursery I asked them the other day what is used in their compost and they said it is Mushroom Compost with Chicken and Turkey Manure composted in. How would you rate it?

I personally think most commercial mushroom compost are not near as good as our homemade composts. Most mushroom farmers use too many synthetic pesticides or herbicides on their mushrooms before harvesting them from the growing medium (which is where the mushroom compost comes from). Plus since mushrooms are fungi, almost all fungi need acidic soil conditions in order to thrive. Homemade compost has a near neutral pH.

I do not know if I would really classify this as commercial mushroom compost. They have very very large pile of the compost in the back of their nursery. The bags are not labeled they are just clear heavy duty bags that they fill every so many days. The bags contain 3 cu ft of compost that is nice and dark and moist not wet.

I get mushroom compost and soil mix delivered from my dirt guru. Last year I built an arbor at my side gate and removed 3'X3'X12" of clay on each side of the arbor. I filled it with my mix and planted two grapevines. This is the first full growing season, and I think I still have an arbor under the vines somewhere...
