Last weekend I spent about 11 hours digging weeds like dandelions, knotweed, creeping charlie, and another with flowers I can't identify, out of my front yard. Actually, once the weeds were gone there was no longer a real need to mow the lawn immediately. I still have the backyard to do, and gee, those weeds have gotten a foot or two taller, each. (My nephew has BEGGED me to let him mow the yard, and I've been waiting on him to get his bootie over here - or I would have mowed it myself!)
I know that this was probably totally ineffective on permanently ridding the yard of the weeds, but it made me feel better to see the crud piling up at the curb.
What a HUGE pile of greens I made! Only problem is, since every one of those weeds is of the noxious invader type, I don't think I should add them to my compost bin or pile, which have NEVER gotten hot. :(
I'm afraid it will just re-distribute the weeds in my garden if I do that. Am I right? |

actually, physical removal is perhaps the singularly most effective way to get rid of weeds.
I would add that stuff to the compost pile after throwing some sugar or molasses on, then putting more molasses on top, and soak it down. That will get it hot, shouldn't have to worry about seeds at that point. |

*whew* I'm glad to hear it wasn't a total waste of time.... Sprayed the yard 2 years running, and I really believe the stuff only fertilized the weeds!
I don't have access to molasses, but sugar I have... what's the best way and amount to apply it? :D |

um...just dump it on, probably can't over do it. If I am using sugar, i just use about a five pound bag, about half and then more material and then half again.
Then water.... |

Wait a sec, if you have never had a hot pile I dont think that adding sugar or molasses will solve your problem. You may not have a hot pile for many reasons. Adding sugar may not be the answer.
