So much of a good thing...fig tree gone berserk!

My fig tree has mutated into a Garrett Juice Monster..between the foliar feeding or perhaps the composted rabbit/chicken poop, my little fig tree is literally groaning under the crowds of ripening giant figs...with new ones popping up each morning. I am propping up branches with old tomato cages, recycled broom handles and whatever I can find. My question is this - should I be concerned about pruning it back? Each time I pick a peck of fruit, to try to relieve some of the weight on the branches, new fruit appears and weighs the branch all over again. I have not had this problem before. It's all the Dirt Doctor's fault..

How lucky for you! I hope you like figs! Have you eaten any yet? I'll be glad to take some of them off your hands.

By the way, a great appetizer; cut the fig down the middle, almost in 2 but not quite. Put a piece of creamy chees in the middle then wrap with a piece of proscutto (sp?) put in the oven until the cheese is melting and oozy. YUM. Glass of red wine and you are set.

Come on down! The figs are delicious and sweet..Looks like I am going to be making fig preserves...and fig bread (?), and fig newtons...There nothing like going on out in the morning and picking breakfast right off the tree.

My family has been growing figs for decades. Each winter the trees are severely pruned to keep them small and manageable. Maybe that will work for you after the growing season.
