I have used a salt system for my in ground pool for several years. It breaks the sodium chloride into sodium and chlorine, sanitizes and then recombines into salt. I only need to add chlorine when it stays very hot for long periods of time. Cost is about the same as chlorine and I feel it is better for the environment and easier on the skin too. I go through about 600 pounds of salt per year at a cost of about $6 / 50 lbs.

Does anyone know of a better system? My brother had a baquacil system for his hot tub and I couldn't stand the smell (but maybe his was not well maintained ??).
