My squash grows great but just when it starts to grow those wonderful yellow veggys, a hole or two shows up in the vine and these little bugs are inside??? Drives me crazy, I do not use pesticides.
I also have grapevines and something is eating the leaves, there is always ants at the ends of new growth?
I live in fort Worth and really need some guidence. |

If the "bugs" are white larvae with black on their heads, then they are squash vine borers, moths that are black and orange-red and look a little like wasps. You'll have to cut the plant length-wise and pull it out then bury the part of the plant that you cut. You can also inject BT with a syringe (I used a turkey injector from Academy), but the larvae has to eat it.
I did not have a whole lot of luck with either of these last year because I had too many of them. I even used a floating row cover, I gave up on that after I found moths underneath it. Pesky things. I'm not planning to grow any squash for a while and maybe they will die out in my area. |
