If you will add apple cider vinegar to your watering can before giving it to the plants it will change something in the soil and the gnats will avoid the plants. You still have to kill the adults tho - I find that the yellow sticky stakes work easily and have no odor.

Soak a mosquito dunk in water overnight and water your plants with that water. The same bacteria that kills the mosquito larvae kills the gnat larvae.
