I have recently moved into a new house. The backyard has St. Augustine grass, Crepe Myrtle and a few miscellaneous plants. I would like to put in raised bed and start a vegetable garden next year. I will need to kill off or remove the grass - does anyone have any recommendations as to how to best do this? Also, I would like to retain the Crepe Myrtle but the line the yard and I am afraid of their impact on a future garden.
Any advice is appreciated

Perhaps a few question to get the subject going.
[1] How large?
[2] How deep?
[3] Construction materials you like to use?
Most grasses can be killed off by just covering it with 6" of soil after being mowed very short or scalped and laying down several thicknesses of news papers....not the slick print ads sections.
Before installing your elevated construction materials, dig a narrow parimeter ditch and install some type of metal or plastic vertical barrier to keep the grasses from running underneath.
Try to keep the top surface of the containment area level so that water does not run to one side and stand there for a long period of time. |
