I haven't grown honeydew mellons but have tried cantalope. They did great this year and about took over the garden. I got 2 dozen from only 3 plants. To many for the wife and I to eat so gave away the extras to the neighbors. I would think that the honeydews would do good if you put down compost and cover the bare soil with 7 layers of newspoaper and mulch on top. I bag my grass clippings, the mulch mower is currently not working, and use it for the mulch. They break down and make good fertilizer and also I don't have many weeds come up thru the paper and mulch. The ones that do pop up I just pull out and add to the compost bin.
Try the honeydew and let us know how well they grow. |
