How will I know when my watermelons are ripe? I've never grown melons before and thought I'd give it a try this year. I have DOZENS of melons! But I don't know how to tell when they are ripe... Help?

Todd

Look at the two nearest tendrils to the stem of the melon. When those dry up and turn brown, I usually pick them within a week. There's also a "thump" test, but I don't have any faith in my ability to tell and ripe thump from an unripe one. Maybe someone else can help you out on that one. I'm growing Sugar Babies this year and the taste is great.

Wonderful. Thank you for the information. It works. As a trial I picked one with dried tendrils and one with out. The difference was very noticable. Very tasty indeed. Funny, though, the unripe melon (yellowish orange flesh) was still nearly as sweet as the ripe one!
Thank you,
Todd
