I'm planting several varieties of softneck garlic this fall and hope to determine which suit our tastes best for future plantings. We'll probably have six to eight varieties and most would be saved for planting next year (other than "taste-testing"). How far apart should the varieties be planted to prevent cross-polination?

Garlic and other alliums can be planted very close.
I'd say about 4-6" is ok.

I don't think cross pollination is possible for any alliums for one season.
Only next season's crop could be effected if you reuse the seeds from the crop .
