salt brine

Nothing grows today where Carthage once stood in North Africa. The Romans sowed the soil with salt 2300 years ago.
Has anyone tried using salt brine to kill unwanted foliage?
Is there any reason why it should not be used?

Table salt is NaCl (sodium and chlorine).

However Na and Cl are listed as beneficial trace elements for all plants, when used in proper proportions.

I have read that if Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is added to compost tea recipes, the extra magnesium and sulfur, gets mixed with the humus and the beneficial microbes, so that Mg, S, Na, Cl, Ca, P, K, and other nutrients get buffered and balanced in proper proportions and levels, so that high saline soils can still grow many crops anyway.

Nothing grows in most of North Africa and the Arabian peninsula. I believe it is the result of poor land management, but you're saying at least some of it was intentional??
