Compost pile is where they should go. Driving over them a few times in the driveway first will help them break faster.

The more protein/ammonia/nitrogen, and constant aeration and moisture you have in your compost pile, the faster the pile will make pleasant smelling, healthy compost.

I pick up my acorns in the "pooper scooper" when I pick up our She-Boxer's "leavings". I deposit both in a semi-dedicated section just behind my compost pile. The combination seems to break down rather quickly, and then I incorporated any remaining material into the rest of the pile every couple of months.
