This summer I have two horses with itchy tails. Underneath the top of the tail and on the buttocks under the tail are raw itchy spots. I also have a couple of friends fighting the same problem. I have been to two vets. One gave me a spray for itching and scarring, one gave me expensive steroid shots. Neither worked. They say it's caused by flies, but I have not seen this problem in the 30 years I've owned horse and the flies were not extremely bad this year. I have treated them with Miconazole cream (which seems to help more than anything), frequent baths, a combination of Listerene and Aloe gel, a diluted vinegar spray, but I still have itchy tails.

Udders can collect dirt in crease between teats and cause tail rubbing. Wash and apply Bag Balm. Sheaths that need cleaning can cause tail rubbing.

Shelf above anus can get dirty. Dust and clean underside of tail.

They can reinfect themselves with pin worms by rubbing on areas contaminated. Wash down stall walls, feeders and fence.

Dry skin can be relieved by a few drops of baby oil in rinse water.

Sheets with butt staps can protect area.
