The vines serving as a shade for my unenclosed patio have petered out over 20 years. What would be a good replacement vine to cover a vertical framework about 6 feet high and 12 feet long? Thanks.

I like Carolina Jessamine. (Some people pronounce it "Jasmine, but it is not a jasmine). It is an evergreen and has yellow flowers in the spring. It blooms better in the sun, not so much in the shade. Do not eat any part of this plant.

The woman living next door to me when I was in Lewisville had a beautiful patio covered in Carolina Jessamine. I now have some in my yard in Carrollton growing over some old metal window structures and I love it!
:)

Here are more ideas:

bob;
until you get a vine up there where it is giving you the shade you want maybe think about using hyacinth bean annual vine for a quick fix. i find it to be pretty, fast, & easy. along with vines, maybe think about one of the thornless climbing roses like Lady Banksia (yellow or white) or Mme. Alfred Carriere (pink).
just for fun, let us know what you choose.

I second that on the lady banks yellow thornless rose. fast and pretty and drought resistant. a climbing rose that grows to 20 feet so you may need 2 or 3
