Growing potatoes with cedar mulch

question 1:
I have a big pile of cedar mulch and I was thinking of using it to grow potatoes. I have read other threads here about using leaves and compost and bunching it around the plants as they grow. Do you think cedar would work? It's fairly broken down but I wouldn't call it compost.

question 2:
I have cut a few seed potatoes and they've been callusing over for about a week. The cut surfaces are looking somewhat gray to black. Is this a bad sign? How should the callus look?

question 3:
If I use a cage (as suggested on previous threads) to retain the mulch, what is the diameter of each cage and how many seed potatoes do I plant per cage?

I think I would grow them as if they were in the ground, give them space. Don't cut them to small and if they have a lot of eyes(sprouts) I would nip off some and leave at least 2 or 3. Grown spuds for years and that's how great spuds. getting ready to put ours in this weekend.
