strawberries

Was in Walmart last night (getting a tire swapped) and saw that they have strawberries out to be planted. (As well as some other stuff.)

When should strawbs be planted? I'm in Denton, of course.

I"ve tried growing strawberries a few times, and planted them in Fall. My soil's just too heavy and clay for them to do well, even with all the amendments I add. It probably depends on the variety, or at least that's what I've read.

Try them in hanging baskets. Works ok, still not that great overall. Sort of bitter I have found. I think they are supposed to get better on the second year, but I never let it go that long.

From what I have read, strawberries are cold hardy down to about 15 degrees F. Mine have been in the ground all winter and I've covered them with row cloth only when it has been below about 28 degrees.

You might try putting them in after this cold snap. I imagine they will handle the cold better if they have a few days of milder whether to get over transplant shock and begin to grow their roots before the next cold snap.

Well, I wanted to do that, but both the nurseries I went to today didn't have strawb plants or seeds. I asked at one, and she said they usually don't get them until the first of March!

grr... it's ok, I seem to have the flu anyway, so I dunno if I have enough energy to plant. I did get some packs of brassica juncea, though! And some basil plants to replace the ones I lost to the spider mites.
