If you are considering the purchase of a new pair of binoculars for birding here are a couple of items to consider.

Look for numbers like 7x35 and 8x40 or 8x42. The first number indicates the magnification and the 2nd number the diameter of the front lens. Magnifications of less than 7 or more than 10 should be avoided. The 2nd number provides an indication of light gathering capability. Avoid anything less than 35.

Look for close focus distance, under 10 feet is desirable.

If you wear eyeglasses make sure the binoculars you purchase have soft eyecups to accommodate eyeglass wearers.
