The Loggerheaded Shrike is also called the butcher bird for its habit of impaling insects, mice and other prey on thorns or barbed wire.
It is a winter resident throughout the state and nests in the eastern half. Numbers are declining.
The very similar Northern Shrike is found, as its name suggests, in the northern part of the country amd is seldom seen in Texas. |
