I recently returned from spending a few days on Stratton Island, off the coast of Maine. The island is bird sanctuary owned by the Audubon Society. Four species of terns nest on the island, which this year included the entire Maine nesting population of Least Terns, a little over 100 pair.

Great Black-backed Gulls and Herring Gulls enjoy dining on young terns and a part of the management program is protecting the young terns from the gulls.

Some of the terns were still in the puff-ball stage.

Open-ended boxes have been provided as a hiding location for the young terns.

Adults will continue to feed the young even after they are old enough to fly.
