| I read in Dirt Dr. to compost cat litter, but use Zeolite or litter that benefits soil. Its too expensive for me to use--can I blend it with something and what are alternatives? |

There is S'Wheat scoop made from wheat hulls and on the market available in most Petsmart, etc. There are a couple more made from waste paper, ground up pine and a couple of others.
I have used rice hulls for cat litter for the last 2 years and we all love it - the cats, my kids (who empty the cat boxes) and me. It composts well and it is CHEAP, CHEAP CHEAP. A six cubic foot bag usually retails for around $6.00
And if you're in the market for cheap mulch, it works well for that too. It's all over my front yard beds with a thin layer of cedar on top. Talk about budget conscious...YES IT IS.

I use wood stove pellets for our cat. They're exceptionally cheap ($5 for 40 lbs in my area), scoopable and absorbant, expand with use, and become fluffy. One quart of stove pellets, which looks like a stingy amount to begin with, fills up the catbox. In addition, I am able to stretch out catbox cleaning times almost 2x, with no smell.
When it's time to clean and refill the box, I put the used litter in the compost pile, and by the time of the next cleaning, the pile has already broken down to next to nothing. |

Rice hulls can be purchased at several feed stores in north Texas, especially those that carry horse products. I got my last bag at one of the last feed stores in north Dallas, Silk Feed on Harry Hines Blvd. at Royal Lane. Call your local feed stores and see who's got 'em. Good luck!
