Sorry, I'm a newb. When do you pick carrots? Are they like radishes, they should peek out over the soil line first?

It's hard to describe, but there is a "mature" look the foliage gets when they are ready to pick. Probably the best thing for a newbie to do is look at the base of the plants. You can pretty much tell the carrot has reached a decent size by looking at the diameter of the root at the soil line.
