While waiting for comments, you might want to research the Turfalo Grass. It was discussed a couple of months ago.

I"m working in Plainview and drive past the Turfalo development site every time I go back to San Antonio. I haven't stopped in but I have seen Turfalo in the garden shops and in two installations in Lubbock.
As far as watering goes, if you want green grass you have to water it. The only reason they say that St Augustine is a water hog is that if you don't water it during a drought, it will die out completely. Other grasses will go dormant in a drought, but not St Augustine.
The Turfalo installations I have seen look very good. One was mowed down to 3/4 inch high. The other was more normal at about 1.75 inches. Both looked very good in the sun and very weak in the shade of trees in the yards. I was very impressed by the turf.
Best time to water is in the morning before the heat of day. |
