I have an area on my property that the past owner used as his garden. It is surrounded by garlic plants...tons of them. The past couple of years we have just mowed the tops down when they turned brown...which leaves no doubt in our minds that this plant is garlic! I am currently trying my hand at gardening in the same spot but not doing to well :( ...anyway I think he planted the garlic to discourage the moles. So my question is: Is this garlic edible and how do I tell what type it is? Are there any good websites or books out there?

Thank you in advance,
Judy

Is it possible to ask the former property owner these questions? I am not too up on garlic as I only raise elephant garlic.

I have a similar issue. I found some stuff that looked just like garlic with the tops all died down but their was absolutely no garlic flavour. Is this old garlic or something else? This was early August. Do you think it was just old? I have no idea how long it had been there but you could still see the withered flower heads.
